The incidence and mechanism of heading in European professional football players over three seasons

There are concerns surrounding the risk of neurodegenerative diseases associated with football (soccer) heading. The aim this study was to conduct analysis on incidence and mechanism heading in “Big 5” professional European leagues (Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Premier League, La Liga Serie A) one lower tier league (English Championship) from 2016/17 2018/19. Match event data 7147 matches were obtained Opta Sports feed. parsed extract header details including player position, coordinates field, type preceding match (including distance travelled). Incidence reported as headers per or player. Medians interquartile ranges (IQR) either Mann-Whitney U test Kruskal-Wallis conducted for comparisons between positions leagues. In leagues, most occurred during League (111.2 match).
